THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The City Corporation has invited logo for its awareness campaign on ‘Killiyar City Mission’, which it plans to launch on August 5.The campaign aims to create awareness about the river pollution due to dumping of waste in nearby drains. The logo will have to be either submitted to the Killiyar City Mission Office at the Corporation Office or should be send to killiyarcitymission@gmail.com on or before Monday.

As part of the campaign, it was decided that strict actions would be taken against the flat and building owners who do not have proper waste-dumping facilities. The health wing of the Corporation has estimated that 590 loads of waste would be cleared from Killiyar. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and standing committee chairman will conduct the awareness campaign at various schools as part of the mission. There will also be  door-to-door campaigns.

Though it was earlier decided to launch the campaign from July 22, the Corporation decided to postpone the same after a meeting held by the Mayor V K Prasanth with the Killiyar city mission organising committee on Monday. The decision to extend the date was taken to narrow the gap between the awareness campaign and cleaning day programme.

According to the Corporation, the one-day cleaning program of the Killiyar river will be held on September 8. It was in April that the Killiyar gets the much-needed attention in the form of Killiyar Mission, a voluntary programme chalked out by Haritha Kerala Mission to clean the river through people participation. While initiating various measures including constructing check dams, strengthening the boundaries by laying geo-textiles and planting trees, the mission had also considered a status report on the river made by Karakulam Rural Study Centre. Before embarking on a cleaning drive, the Mission had also organized a gathering named ‘Puzhayarivu’ which was attended by people’s representatives, volunteers and others.

The initiative, which was taken up by the Corporation based on its mega cleaning project, will be overseen by a committee with Mayor VK Prasanth as its chairman, development standing committee chairperson Vanchiyoor Babu as its general convener and all standing committee chairpersons as its co-conveners.
