VIJAYAWADA: The VMC has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the kin of sanitation worker Gunja Gangaraju (37) who died on Tuesday after falling into a manhole at H block of Vambay Colony.
G Badramma, the wife of the deceased, met municipal commissioner J Nivas at his office on Wednesday. She was accompanied by CPM capital region committee convener Ch Babu and members of municipal corporation employees union.
The civic body chief interacted with Badramma and assured to provide her a house under JNNURM scheme, along with a contractual job to a member of the family.

The civic body chief interacted with Badramma and assured to provide her with a house under JNNURM scheme, along with a contractual job to a member of the bereaved family.
“As per a Supreme Court directive, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be given to the kin of families in case of manhole deaths. Besides, the bereaved family will be also given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh under Chandranna Bheema scheme. The compensation cheque will be handed over to the kin of Gangaraju in next of couple of days,” Nivas said. The commissioner assured that a department-level inquiry would be conducted soon and appropriate action would be taken basing on the report.
In March 2016, a worker died due to suffocation near the civil courts complex. One had gone down a manhole to clear it, but toxic fumes killed him. Two more died in similar circumstances in March 2017 at Bhavanipuram.
The incident had triggered an uproar among the conservancy workers, who demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. After dragging its feet on payment of compensation to the kin of the two deceased workers it relented and paid Rs 10 lakh each to the families in accordance to the Supreme Court guidelines.
