VIJAYAWADA: A joint team of Nandigama and Kanhikacherla police busted illegal sand mining at Raghavapuram village in Krishna district in the wee hours of Monday and seized 78 tractors owned by a contractor.

According to Nandigama rural police station Sub Inspector Satish Kumar, police acted on the tip-off by residents of Raghavapuram about illegal sand mining in the Krishna river at night and raided the sand reach.

“The accused contractor has permission only to extract sand from the respective reach during the day but he flouted the rules and excavated sand at night and sold it at a higher price,” SI Satish Kumar said. A case has been registered and referred to Mining and Geology Department.
