A large glass of meethi lassi, yummy dosas, tasty samosa’s, hot poori’s and a delicious variety of noodles, leave their palates tickling. Topping it all is the ambience. It’s their coolest khatti (hangout in Odia) joint, the place to catch a glimpse of who’s who of the Ravenshaw University.

For Shirshendu Roy, Abhyarthana Mishra and their group of friends of journalism department, their varsity canteen, run by Vithal Kamat Group, is one of the hot spots on campus. Unlike most other hangouts, there’s always room for everyone here, claim the students. The early birds find solace here; the bookworms know just where to find a quiet spot to devour their novels and the last-minute crammers congregate here before every exam. “It could be something as inane as the outfit worn by a particular person, or what happened in class the other day, playing ‘bottle spin’, anything as long as we friends are together and talking. Also you get to meet and make new friends as students from other departments come by,” says Roy, a final-semester student of the department.

“It is one of the happening places in college. Real discussions happen here in the canteen,” says Mishra. One of the things that students boast about is the delicious snacks menu. Not just hygienic, the food is affordable as well.

“The canteen is our favourite hangout zone as it is spacious and has a wide variety of food to offer. Here, we get scrumptious and quick food at low rates,” says Mishra. Surely the canteen is all about food and ‘bindaas timepass’.

A sprawling lawn near the canteen is always brimming with students.

Besides the canteen, the students also visit Monginis Cake Shop, a fast food joint and ice-cream parlour just outside the campus, for variety and

a change in location.
