She follows her father into the world of politics

Aristotle once remarked that “man is basically a political animal”. Fathima Thahiliya is also of the same opinion. Her strong belief in politics made her join Haritha, the girls wing of the student organisation Muslim Students Federation (MSF). Thahiliya, a fourth-year LLB student of Government Law College, Kozhikode, is the general secretary of Haritha, which was constituted last September.

Her father Abdul Raheem K, who is a member of Muslim League encouraged Thahiliya to join politics. “But that is not the sole reason. I believe, it is essential for each and every individual to have a strong political understanding of events and initiatives that are undertaken in a country,” says Thahiliya.

Though she has been placed on top of the student organisation, Thahiliya’s dreams are not going to end with simply entering politics. “I entered politics without a plan. My aim is to become a good lawyer. But if the society needs my services as a politician, I won’t hesitate to continue. As a lawyer I will not be able to help people across the board. I think political activism would definitely help a lawyer do more for people,” she points out.

Thahiliya has strong views on extremism. “Extremism is vulgar. We have to remain tolerant and respect contradictory views and ideals. Beauty lies in variety. We need to see the good in others and not take them for granted. That is how I work,” she says.
