Now, all educational certificates to be digitised

A national academic depository (NAD) on the lines of a securities depository, is set to come up in the next three months to digitally store school learning certificates, degrees and other academic awards of institutions of higher education. The depository would be established and operationalised within the next three months and would be rolled out throughout the country in 2017-18, the Union Cabinet decided today. The Finance Minister’s Budget speech in February had incorporated the commitment to establish a Digital Depository for school learning certificates, degrees and other academic awards of higher education institutions, on the pattern of a Securities Depository, a statement issued after the Cabinet meeting said.

Chennai colleges betting big on solar plants
Several colleges are increasing their installation capacity of solar power plants to cut down on the electricity bills. Already, many educational institutions have units generating 20 kilowatt (KW) to 100 KW, and now they are going to 500 KW units. Institutions like Anna University (AU), Madras Medical College (MCC), MOP Vaishnav College, D G Vaishnav College, Vivekananda College, Jerusalem Engineering College, and Mohammad Sathak AJ College of Engineering on OMR are using solar power. Anna University installed small-capacity solar power generation plant in 2013. Currently, the three colleges affiliated to the AU, including College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) and AC Tech, generate 34 KW daily.

Act barring pvt colleges from opening law schools struck down

In a decision that will restructure legal education in Tamil Nadu, the first bench of the Madras High Court set aside the Tamil Nadu Establishment of Private Law Colleges (Prohibition) Act, 2014 as ultra vires of the Constitution. Under this Act, private institutions were not permitted to open law colleges in the state.

Medico’s death: Kin seek to change probe officer

Family members of the MBBS student who died at the Ernakulam Medical College under mysterious circumstances urged the State Government to depute an officer with credible track record to investigate the case. Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, father of Shamna Tasnim, and their relative alleged that persons responsible for Shamna’s death were making attempts to sabotage the probe. “It has been 100 days since I lost my daughter. Yet, no action, except suspension of two doctors, has been taken. As per the report, Shamna was given an antibiotic injection at 3 pm, and was administered a medicine at 3.15 pm after she developed a reaction.

40 students faint inside Bharathidasan Univ hall

All was not well in terms of arrangements at BDU 2016, this year’s edition of Bharathidasan University’s (BDU) annual intercollegiate cultural festival that concluded on Sunday. Close to 40 participants who were forced to perform in a closely packed auditorium fainted as the building lacked a ventilation system. Students pursuing undergraduate courses in state government degree colleges will soon have the opportunity to  attend lectures by experts from various fields. In an effort to help students get an idea of career opportunities ahead of them, the Department of Collegiate Education has decided to introduce the concept of visiting faculties to deliver lectures.
