DHARMAPURI (TN): In a poll-related incident, a 32-year old local DMDK functionary died today after he was attacked allegedly by a DMK worker in a village, 32 km from here, police said.

One person has been remanded in judicial custody in connection with the incident.

S Ashokan, DMDK Branch Secretary of Paruvathanahalli village, 32 km from here, succumbed to injuries at government hospital in Salem where he was rushed to after being attacked with a wooden log by DMK worker K Sekar last night, they said.

Sekar was arrested on murder charge and produced before Pennagaram Magistrate S Jayaprakash who remanded him to 15 days judicial custody.

Police said Asokan and Sekar, who are neighbours, had been directed by election officials to erase election symbols of their respective parties which they had drawn on the walls of their houses. Asokan, who erased the graffiti, had complained to police as Sekar did not do so.

Police visited Sekar's house and warned him. Angered by this, Sekar picked up a quarrel with Asokan and allegedly assaulted him with a wooden log, they said.

Several police pickets have been put up, including Paruvathanahalli.
