Violence erupts in Kannur, CPM worker killed in bomb attack

According to reports, clashes between CPM and IUML workers were also reported from Azhikode.

KOZHIKODE: Hours after assembly election results which swayed in favour of LDF, violence erupted in various parts of Kannur when CPM, BJP and IUML workers clashed in the streets resulting in the death of a CPM worker in a country bomb attack at Pinarayi in Dharmadom constituency.

Heavy police force have been rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The victim was identified as Raveedran hailing Kambil Motta. Police said the attack occurred when unidentified persons hurled bombs at a group of CPM party members who were celebrating the victory of CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan from Dharmadom.

According to reports, clashes between CPM and IUML workers were also reported from Azhikode where CPM candidate M V Nikesh Kumar lost to IUML's K M Shaji in a tight fight.

Senior police officers are evaluating the situation and central forces will be deployed. The district collector has called for an emergency meeting and prohibitory orders will be imposed if situation worsen further.
