Two leaves flourish in the fertile Cauvery belt

TIRUCHY: The AIADMK almost sweeped the region which helped provide a clear mandate to the party. The region which includes Tiruchy, Karur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur send 39 MLAs to the Assembly.

In Tiruchy district, AIADMK secured five and DMK won four seats. In Tiruchy West, DMK strongman KN Nehru defeated his rival on a margin of 28,415 votes while, N Natarajan, of AIADMK clinched Tiruchy East with a margin of 21,894.

AIADMK sweeped five out of six seats in Nagapattinam. In Pudukkottai district, both the parties secured seats in 50:50 ratio. AIADMK. State Health minister C Vijayabasker retained his seat in Viralimalai. Ariyalur assembly segment was secured by AIADMK candidate S Rajendran by defeating DMK candidate SS Sivasankar. JKN Ramajeyalingam defeated PMK’s prominent candidate Guru, J Gurunathan in Jayankondam segment.

Meanwhile, in the remaining three segments, Karur and Krishnarayapuram went to the AIADMK while Kulithalai was secured by DMK candidate E Ramar. DMK president M Karunanidhi defeated his nearest AIADMK rival R Pannerselvam with a margin of 68,366 votes in Karur in his 13th consecutive electoral victory.
