Madhya Pradesh elections: Babulal Gaur is BJP star campaigner for now

From our online archive

BHOPAL: Even as the suspense continues over the fate of former chief minister Babulal Gaur and his daughter-in-law Krishna Gaur as BJP candidates in Madhya Pradesh, the ruling party named the octogenarian leader among the list of 40 star campaigners for the assembly polls.

Gaur, the eight-time sitting MLA from Govindpura seat of Bhopal district, figures on the 30th place in the list of 40 star campaigners. State BJP general secretary BD Sharma, who was touted as the possible BJP candidate from Govindpura, also figures in the list. If sources close to the Gaur family are to be believed, then the former CM and his daughter-in-law have got nomination forms ready to contest as Independent candidate from the seat, if both of them are denied ticket. The last date of filing nomination is November 9.

Gaur’s name as a star campaigner is also being seen as an indication that his daughter-in-law may be declared the BJP candidate from Govindpura, despite a large section of the RSS backing BD Sharma’s candidature.

In an another important development, two-time sitting MLA from Seoni Malwa Sartaj Singh seems to be opting out of the race for contesting the poll again from the seat. “I’ve told the CM the name of a popular local party worker who stands to be in the best position in my absence to win the poll from Seoni Malwa. I won’t disclose the name to the media,” he said.
