BANGALORE: Actor Suniel Shetty is a worried man today. The man who had almost retired from acting last year is on a signing spree these days. Reason? “Thanks to recession, I’ve nothing much to do as producer. Toh koi toh dukaan khuli rakni thi,” says the actor, who was in town to promote his film Daddy Cool.
The film is a frame-to-frame copy of 2007 Hollywood film Death At A Funeral, isn’t? “Yes, it is similar to Death At A Funeral but this time the producers legally bought the rights to make this one. Thankfully, we are not calling it an inspiration,” the man answers this one with full honesty.
But why buy ideas from west instead of making originals? “To begin with, I’d like to say that there are no good writers in the industry. Mostly, what these so-called writers offer as their original script is 5-6 foreign films put together. That’s so sad,” the actor gets full marks for his honesty again.
Suniel rues the fact that there are no good schools in the country to teach scriptwriting which are needed now ‘when the filmmakers are ready to experiment’.
“Look at Kaminey, which is doing so well.
In our country more importance is given to the actors and directors and the technical experts are totally ignored, which should not be the case. In fact, it should be the other way around.” The man sounds hopeless not just about the industry, but also about his own production house. “There’s nothing much happening right now as there are no distributors.
I’ve given myself a 2010 deadline, to decide what to do next. Till then, it’s acting that’s going to keep me busy,” he concludes.
