The Europe Music Awards 2011, is back. Scheduled to take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on November 6, we bring you a list of artists likely to make it, and live performances that are bound to keep you tuned in.
The short list
The nominees for the Best Song are all our favourites. On the Floor— Jennifer Lopez’s reinterpretation of the Portugese hit ‘Lambada’, fea¬turing Pitbull’s rap and 90’s techno music—has hit the right chord with pop lovers. Then, there’s Bruno Mars with his heartbreaker ‘Grenade’. Katy Perry’s number, ‘Firework’, with its inspirational lyrics has also been nominated. After making it to the top on four Billboard charts, ‘Rolling in the Deep’, by Adele, has every chance of winning the title. Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’, which incorporates elements from genres like rock and roll, opera, heavy metal and disco, also seems potent with winning chords.
Between the scenes
Lady Gaga will make up for her absence at last year’s event by treating us with her live act at the awards this time. Watch out for performances by Justin Bieber, LMFAO, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Snow Patrol and the legendary British rock icons, Queen, who have been honoured Global Icon this year.
Making headlines
Last year’s show, hosted by Eva Longoria (who swapped 13 costumes) and Justin Bieber, was stacked with performances by Linkin Park, Paramore and others. It also had its share of controversy with Jason ‘WeeMan’ Acuña exposing his privates to the audience.
Alternative anyone?
Arcade Fire, whose album The Suburb won the Grammy for Album of the Year 2011, has every chance of winning the Best Alternative Album. Arctic Monkeys (who won five Brit Awards till date), My Chemical Romance (whose album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was awarded platinum status), 30 Seconds to Mars and The Strokes are the other contenders.
What’s new?
The special category added this year is Worldwide Act, an award that has been divided into five regions— Europe, Africa-India-Middle East, Asia-Pacific, North America and South America. The nominees are Restart from Brazil, Lena whose number Satellite was a success all over Europe, Britney Spears, Bigbang (the Korean group who won Best New Artist at the MTV Music Awards) and Abdelfattah Grini, an Arabic singer. We also hear Mumbai’s Scribe was longlisted for this category.
