When fashion designer Masaba Gupta wrapped up her rather interesting two-year-old stint at Satya Paul in October 2014, many thought the brand will fall into a rabbit hole. Fashion commentators waited to see if it gets back to churning out prints like it always did and getting lost in the process. But the 31-year-old brand proved everyone wrong. Soon after Gupta left, it got together with Gauri Khan, actor Shah Rukh Khan’s better half, to come up with three collections. After Gauri presented her final line, Satya Paul announced its autumn/winter 2016 collection titled Star Struck in collaboration with actor and model Malaika Arora as the face of the collection. But the real twist was this: Satya Paul, for the first time, used traditional Indian weaves and crafts such as Benaras and Chanderi silks with metal and thread work in its collection. There’s a woven Benaras silk saree with zari and crystal work, studded with metal flowers. Looks like the brand is struck by #IWearHandloom fever that Textile Minister Smriti Irani initiated on social media.
Star Struck, which is inspired by the zodiac signs, is divided into three looks: Constellation, Zodiac Traits and Elements of the Zodiac. The Shibori prints are accenuated with graphic angular motifs, and metallic ornamentation. Apart from sarees, the line also has shift dresses and salwar-kurta made with georgette satin and silks crepe de chine.
