LOS ANGELES: Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the handsome pirate ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ made the character and the movie a runaway hit but there are some in Disney who wonder if the 'rascal' character was drunk or if he is a stylishly portrayed gay.
When confronted by the executives after Depp first acted out the character, the actor admitted that his character was somewhere inspired by Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones Rocker. Johnny had always admired the rocker and copied his roguish style in the movie.
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series is remembered for its Captain’s ‘never say die’ attitude. Apparently in an interview to Vanity Fair magazine, Depp said that he had received a lot of calls from the senior executives who wanted to know whether the character was some kind of weird simpleton or was he a gay. In spite of the confusion, Depp was more than convinced that the role would be a hit. He decided not to alter the character.
When he was questioned by an executive, he told her that all the characters that he had played were gay.
