LONDON: Hollywood actor Mel Gibson has quit smoking for the sake of his infant daughter.

The one-time chain smoker is convinced he has kicked his nicotine habit once and for all, although it wasn't easy, reported imdb.com

"The first three days, you're an axe murderer. On day four you might take a bat to someone. Day five? You're OK," said the "Braveheart" star.

The actor's decision to quit smoking has had immediate health benefits. "I've lost five pounds and I can breathe all the way out," he added.

Gibson's baby girl, Lucia, was born in October last year.
