Playback singer Vijay Yesudas, who debuted as an actor with Maari (2015), will now play the protagonist in the rural-based story Padai Veeran. Directed by Dhana, former assistant of Mani Ratnam, this film has newbie Amritha as the leading lady and filmmaker Bharathiraja in an important role. “The content demanded a fresh face. I know Vijay from Kadal (2013) and OK Kanmani (2015). I’ve observed him while he sang for Mani Ratnam. I felt my lead character was a lot like him, and he immediately agreed to be a part of the film,” he says.

Having extensively shot in and around Theni, the team has shot in Ayyanarpuram, from where Dhana hails. Talking about Vijay, he adds, “I was fortunate to get him on board as he does anything to make his director happy. We’ve tried our best to keep the film real.”
Dhana adds that the film is about a compelling social issue. “Though I’ve tried to convey a message, the film is a commercial venture. I have made sure that my scenes don’t resemble those of Mani Ratnam’s,” he smiles.
