After the success of Mudhalvan in 1999, the film was remade in Hindi as Nayak by producer AM Rathnam with Shankar at the helm again.

The film, which starred Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri and Rani Mukerji, went on to gain a cult status despite not doing well at the box office.

The plans for a sequel to Nayak are now underway, and reports have confirmed that the makers of the Hindi film have approached KV Vijayendra Prasad, father of director SS Rajamouli and writer of Baahubali franchise and Mersal.

Sources also say that the writer has already begun working on the script. It’s currently unclear if Shankar will be reprising his role as the director for the sequel. Nor is it clear if the film will be made in Tamil as well.

The filmmaker currently busy with Rajinikanth’s 2.0. Incidentally, Anil Kapoor’s character in Nayak was called Shivaji Rao — the real name of Rajinikanth whom Shankar had initially approached for Arjun’s role in Mudhalvan.
