MUMBAI: Veteran actor Anupam Kher will be feted with the Kala Ratan Award by Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

"I joined Indian theatre, Panjab University in 1974. Happy and proud to share, today I get Kala Ratan Award by Honourable Vice President of India. Jai Ho," Anupam tweeted on Saturday.

The 61-year-old actor has appeared in a variety of films and many plays. Anupam has also appeared in acclaimed international films such as the 2002 Golden Globe nominated "Bend It Like Beckham", "Lust, Caution" and "Silver Linings Playbook". 

Anupam has been honoured with the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts. He has been a vocal anti-award wapsi activist and his wife Kiron Kher is a BJP MP.

He will next be seen in "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha", which also stars Akshay Kumar and "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" fame Bhumi Pednekar.
