BELGAUM: The multi crore Kannada film ‘Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna’ which stars Darshan in the role of historical character Rayanna seems to be landing in a controversy as the villagers of Sangolli in Bailhongal taluk have raised objections to the film arguing that the flick is not based on the real incidents of Rayanna and is painting Rayanna in a bad shape.

History says, Rayanna was loyal to Rani Channamma and waged war against the British after Channamma was defeated and captured by the colonial masters. Rayanna was captured by the British at a later stage and hanged at Nandagad in Khanapur taluk.

To this extent, the film toes the line of history. The villagers’ bone of contention  is, “While the real history says that Rayanna was not married and remained a bachelor, the film shows him as married and the film posters portray him dancing.”

Mallangouda Patil and  Mallikarjun Kudolli, the village leaders, who spoke to reporters on Friday, complained about the aggrandisement of the character. “The film stills show Rayanna wearing an iron body guard whereas in real life the lieutenant never wore one. Rayanna was not riding horse, but the film shows him riding one,” they said.

They pointed out that contrary to the film’s version where he fights with British in open war, Rayanna always fought in Guerrilla style.
