Aparna Nair may not well be your quintessential star. One can’t spot her in  the rat race for screen space yet she has quite a few credible roles to her credit. And, she is here to stay. “I can do only quality roles and I enjoy playing them. For me, acting is more than ‘number game’,” says Aparna.

And, her perseverance seems to have paid off. For, she will play the female lead opposite Prithviraj in upcoming action flick ‘Mumbai Police’, directed by Rosshan Andrrews.

“I play a cop in ‘Mumbai Police’. The movie is an investigation thriller. This is my first movie in lead,” says Aparna. She will also be seen in ‘Hotel California’, a movie directed by Aji John.

The year, so far, has been very kind to Aparna. Streetlight, the movie in which she played the lead role, did rounds in the state award circuits.

“Acting in ‘Streetlight’ was a wonderful experience as my character has four get-ups. The movie deals with a socially-relevant theme,” she says.

For some one who debuted through Lohitadas’s  ‘Nivedyam’, Aparna is completely happy with her career graph. “I pick roles that I can relate to. I’d rather be seen in a few scenes in a good movie than play lead roles in some obscure ones,” says Aparna.

Her first tryst with fame was when she played the role of ‘Panchali’ in ‘Chayamukhi’, a theatre production that featured actors Mohanlal and Mukesh.

For someone who was a novice at that time, the act brought Aparna to the limelight.

Despite all this, she was seen mainly as sidekicks. “I have no regrets. I enjoyed playing all the characters. Be it in ‘Mallu Singh’ or ‘Run Baby Run’, it was all fun ride,” says Aparna. She adds that her character in ‘Thattathin Marayathu’ was well received by all despite having a limited screen time. “The character was something that stood apart from the cherubic and fizzy nature of the movie. I am thrilled that 90 per cent of the people who saw the movie liked the character,” she said.

One saw her playing a crucial part in V K Prakash’s ‘Cocktail’ and ‘Beautiful’, both identified as new-gen movies. So, does she belong to the  ‘new-gen camp’? “Not at all, I am comfortable working with V K Prakash, Jayasoorya and Anoop Menon. When there is a good character, they offer it to me and I am happy playing that,” says Aparna.
