Children’s favourite friend during the monsoons, the Poppy Kuda, becomes the interesting factor of Arun Dev’s short film by the same name. Arun’s shortfilm ‘Poppy Kuda’ is a nicely done 16-minute short film with a simple and straightforward subject. The film which is already a YouTube hit has close to fifty thousand hits.
For an amateur director, Arun Dev has done a fantastic job with ‘Poppy Kuda’, his second outing in short film making. “Being a techie my main aim in making a film was to show that even we techies have an artistic side to us. All the cast and crew of the film are my friends from the company I work in at Technopark,” Arun gushes. Only the music and editing work have been handled by others.
‘Poppy Kuda’ is not your regular love story where the boy meets girl, though it has all the necessary ingredients of a romantic story. Joe is your quintessential techie who is all excited about meeting his dream girl. “For most guys like him it is a feat achieved to even get noticed by a girl like Lia,” adds the director.
The all excited Joe sets out to meet Lia whom he befriended online. But things do not go as planned for Joe. Though Joe succeeds in meeting his dream girl, he is met with an unexpected element. An unexpected childhood friend Nimmy whom he barely recognizes and barely expects happens to be his dream girl’s friend. To understand the incidents that follow the audience is taken back to Joe’s childhood days and an interesting event that happens when he was just a little kid.
That forgotten incident finally changes his destiny many years later. “Also it is around this time that the audience comes to gather the significance of ‘Poppy Kuda’,” Arun adds.
Beautifully crafted, Arun Dev’s ‘Poppy Kuda’ evokes a feeling of nostalgia in the viewers. Though a romantic story, it the comical twist that makes the film all the more appealing. And the final scene leaves the audience guessing as to the future of Joe.
