Actor Shobana will showcase ‘Samadhina’ - (Trance), a music-dance extravaganza this weekend in Kochi

KOCHI: The celebrated cine actress and dancer Shobana is all set to showcase her latest production. Titled ‘Samadhina’ - (Trance), the music-dance extravaganza will be mounted on Sunday, August 10, 6.30 p.m., at JT Pac, Kochi.

‘Samadhina’ is a quest to present bharatanatyam in an eclectic and spiritual form. Each piece is strewn together on the traditional structure but with music ranging from Sufi, film and khayal, to compositions of Bach and Vivaldi. It will recreate the mystic trance brought about by the Sufi poets as well as saint poets Patanjali and Jayadeva, who transcend man-made religious and social barriers with their imagery.Shobana and her team of eight dancers along with pianist Anil Srinivasan, Padmasri Vijay Ghate (tabla) and Sanjoy Das (guitar). Four bharathanatyam musicians will also be on stage.

Asked about her influences, Shobhana says, “My guru Chitra Visweswaran has been a great influence. Then there is my aunts (the Travancore sisters Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini).” But Shobhana says that she loves many other artistes like the guitarist John Mclaughlin, and dancing gurus like Birju Maharaj and Sonal Mansingh.
