Tuesday, for Jasrangi, was a day of double delight. The Ramesh Narayanan household erupted in joy with the announcement of Kerala State Film Awards wherein Hindustani vocalist and composer Ramesh Narayanan was adjudged the Best Music Director for his work in ‘Ennu Ninte Moideen’ and ‘Edavapathi’ while his daughter Madhusree Narayanan became the Best Singer (Female) for ‘Edavapathi’. Without hiding his glee, Ramesh Narayanan says the honour came in unexpected for both him and his daughter.

“The honour has made me happy. What adds to my joy is the fact that the jury made a sensible judgment thanks to the presence of stalwarts like music director Sharreth. The music used in ‘Edavapathi’ is ‘Astapadi’, but a different genre. It takes a man with deep knowledge in music to appreciate it and honour the effort and I think Sharreth could identify it,” says Ramesh Narayanan.

For Madhusree, the song itself was a surprise. She, initially, was roped in to sing a track for ‘Edavapathi’ but director Lenin Rajendran was so impressed by the track that he wanted to reinstate it. “I initially was hesitant to include the track and urged Lenin to replace it but he was convinced,” says Ramesh Narayanan about his daughter’s win. He added that in his new movie ‘Pathy’, both his daughters - Madhusree and Madhuvanthy - would be singing. Though the work for the movie began almost five years ago, ‘Edavapathi’ got stuck due to several reasons. But, Ramesh Narayanan is upbeat that the movie will hit the screens soon. “It is a movie with a musical flavour and I am looking forward to its release,” says Ramesh Narayanan.

‘Poetic Justice’

Though he was also honoured for his work in R S Vimal’s ‘Enn Ninte Moitheen’, Ramesh Narayanan says he was meted with an unjust treatment. “The whole work of ‘Enn Ninte Moitheen’ began in my home. I coined the title and helped Vimal bag a producer. Initially, I was chosen as the music director for all the six tracks. But, Prithviraj intervened and said my songs were too academic.

The producer and director had to bow to Prithviraj’s demand and it was me who requested music director M Jayachandran to step in. Then, it was decided to include three of my tracks, but later I learnt that except one song, the others were axed. But, even then the honour for Moitheen makes me happy. It is a poetic justice,” says Ramesh Narayanan.
