He might be the perfect funny sidekick, but Saiju Kurup says he just can’t do slapstick comedy. As he wraps up his portion in Mithun Manuel Thomas’ satire Alamara, Saiju says doing comedy, just for the sake of it, is not exactly his forte.
“I can’t use my body or dialogues to create a funny sequence. If you check my movies, all my works are situational comedy. Keeping it subtle suits me best,” says the actor. But, he quickly adds: “In movies like Aadu oru Bheekarajeevi Aanu, I didn’t need to bring in any funny element. The storyline, music, effects and the background score brings in all the comedy. I just had to perform,” says Saiju.
His next Alamara is no different. He says the movie is a family comedy and he will be seen playing the friend of Sunny Wayne.
“Alamara tackles a very serious subject and I play the friend of the protagonist, whose problems are mine too,” says Saiju.In Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela he plays a doctor.
Of course Dr Saiju can make you laugh. “It is a fun ride. I play Dr Saiju, an oncologist. People will naturally have this doubt -- how can an oncologist make you laugh, but wait till the movie hits the theatres,” says Saiju.
But, not everything is a fun ride. For, he just returned from the desert playing a soldier in Major Ravi’s Mohanlal-starrer 1971 Beyond Borders.
“The temperature was extreme. Too hot in the daytime and too cold at night. This is besides the dangers lurking, like rattlesnakes. But, then you have to experience it to understand the hardships soldiers undergo,” says the actor. He will also be seen in Adventures of Omanakuttan.
