'Thenmerku Paruvakaatru' (Tamil, Drama, 2011)

A well-crafted screenplay, clearly defined characters, a smooth, realistic flow of scenes, and fine performances from its entire cast, makes 'Thenmerku Paruvakaatru' one of the more watchable films of recent times.
Set in a rustic milieu, it’s a love story centered around a couple who has to fight against family opposition to succeed in their love.
Murugan is a shepherd and the only son of the widowed Veerayi. The apple of her eye, Murugan takes life easy, stealing from her and boozing with his pals. Murugan falls for Pechi, who belongs to a family of thieves. Facing stiff opposition from his mom, the duo decides to elope and marry.
There are many emotional moments that leave an impact, the climax poignant and moving.
Debutant Sethupathi and Vasundhara fit in suitably as Murugan and Pechi, and essay their roles with natural flair. Theepetti Ganeshan as the buddy, and Arul Das as Pechi’s relative leave their mark. But the film clearly belongs to Saranya. She is brilliant as Veerayi, the distressed mother. Her nuances are perfect with the actress bringing out each dimension of the character beautifully.
Providing key support is debutant NR Rahnandan’s melodious tunes. Coupled with Vairamuthu’s meaningful lyrics, they enhance the emotional feel. The director has picturised them aesthetically, and placed them suitably in his narration.
A film that has worked out well in all departments, 'Thenmerku Paruvakaatru' is worth a watch.
