Muthina Kathirka review: Crass comedy makes film a test of patience

Malini Mannath

The plot revolves around a 40-year old bachelor whose street smart ways help achieve his goals. A romantic comedy with political satire woven in, the film is the remake of Biju Menon’s Malayalam hit Vellimoonga.

Debutant director Venkat Raghavan, a former assistant to Sundar C has stayed almost faithful to the original. But what has relevance and interest for one set of audiences need not work for another. Also, the film’s huge contingent of comic actors, loud and crass, fails to deliver.

The film opens on a humorous note, with the voice of RJ Balaji introducing the protagonist Muthu Pandi and the various characters in his life. Like Pandi’s mother and his selfish siblings and his rivals in politics. Sundar C plays Muthu Pandi ,who hails from a family of unsuccessful politicians. But determined that he would be the change, Pandi manipulates situations to his advantage to climb up the political ladder. It’s about how he fulfils his political aspirations and gets married to the girl he had fallen for late in his life.

Sundar C with his pleasant screen presence cruises through. A pretty Poonam Bajwa as his lady-love has less to do. There are a couple of twists and turns but only mildly interesting. A bit of humour is generated here. Pandi’s rivals in politics are the siblings played by Singampuli and Ganesh, the duo constantly in a game of one-upmanship. The two actors are annoying, their antics putting one off.

Sathish gets a running role as Pandi’s buddy. But while he could tickle the funny bones when he made briefer appearances in his earlier films, he is just not able to pull it off here. Mildly entertaining in the earlier half, Muthina Kathirika as the narration progresses turns out to be a test of patience!
