Vijay Antony is busier than usual these days.
For this sound-engineer- turned-music composer, lyricist and singer who took to centre stage with ‘Sukran’ and ‘Dishyum’, there has been no looking back. After belting out hit numbers for films like ‘Kadhalil Vizhunthaen’, ‘TN 07 AL 4777’ and ‘Vettaikkaaran’, Vijay Antony is wearing the hat of an actor as well with ‘Naan’.
“After we started shooting for the film, I realised how tough a job it is. It is thoroughly a team effort where even if one does not do his role perfectly, everything goes for a toss. All these days, while composing for films, it has always been me and my studio. There has not been interference from the outside world. I would compose music as and when I felt like it. I did not give up composing, I would use time in between shots and sit in my caravan, with a laptop and some technical tools in hand and compose tunes. I am composing music even for this film,” says Vijay Antony.
Ask him how this urge to act came to him and he says, “To me, it is all about calculations, be it composing or even attempting to act. And based on certain calculations for choosing films, I know this film will click and the story will sell. The director of the film is Sankar, who worked as an associate to the late cinematographer Jeeva. He had handled cinematography for ‘Anandha
Thandavam’. We studied together in college and decided to work on this project and give it a shape.”
So, what is his role in the film?
“My name in the film is Karthik, who is a hard working guy. The movie deals with the challenges and problems he encounters,” he says.
Vijay Antony has his hands full, on having signed the Bharath-starrer ‘Yuvan Yuvathi’, Vijay-starrer ‘Velayudham’ and Dhanush-starrer ‘Uthama Puthiran’ apart from ‘Naan’.
“After ‘Vettaikkaaran’, the expectations are high, for ‘Velayudham’, my second consecutive project with Vijay. With director ‘Jeyam’ Raja, one can foresee only a box-office hit. Not many people know that Dhanush is also a composer apart from his recent stint as a singer. Working with him is going to be a great experience. ‘Yuvan Yuvathi’, for a change will have more of melodies, which will linger in the memories of listeners,” says Vijay Antony.
“Technology has improved a lot and it is so useful to music composers these days. Moreover, actors are taking singing seriously as well. I have introduced more than 35 singers in the music industry,” he concludes.
