Captain becomes Dr Vijayakanth!

An American institution has conferred honorary doctorate on the actor-turned-politician for his service to the society.

CHENNAI: The International Institute of Church Management, Florida, USA, conferred a honorary doctorate on actor Vijayakanth on Friday.

Patriarch of the institute, John Williams, honoured Vijayakanth with the award for the service he had rendered to society. Accepting the award, Vijayakanth said that the award did not belong to him but to all his party workers who helped in serving the people of Tamil Nadu. He said he had been doing social service for the people even before he entered politics.

"All religions preach one important thing: love others and help the needy, which I have been doing for long time, now through my party," he said and added that it was this Dharma which guided him whenever he faced trouble in life.He also urged the gathering not to consider themselves as minorities.

"According to me there are only two caste rich and poor, I am for welfare of poor people," he said.SM Jayakumar, president of ACI Diocese, Chennai and Premalatha Vijayakanth participated.
