For music director Dhina, his latest release Seedan, holds a special place in his heart. For one, it is his 50th film as a music director. Secondly, he is overwhelmed by the audiences’ response to his songs. And finally, looks like the good times are here to stay, as the music director has more than 15 films up his sleeve now. “I’ve always been known for folk music. This is the first time that I’ve tried classical music and the response has been tremendous — especially for Dhanush’s Samayal song. It is a hit with women,” says Dhina. The reason? “Dhanush gives out a list of samayal (cooking) tips in the song and the women love it,” he adds.
Dhina says that an opportunity to score classical numbers comes to him rarely. “Director Subramania Siva told me that the songs in this film should create an impact like those of Sankarabharanam. Usually, a hero’s opening song is a peppy one, but in Seedan, we’ve tried classical fusion, and it has gone down very well with the audience,” he says. “The songs towards the climax are making the rounds too,” he adds.
Dhina took a big leap from the small screen to the silver screen with Middle Class Madhavan. Films like Thiruda Thirudi and Thirupachi went on to make him even more popular. He has scored the title songs for more than 150 serials, the latest being the popular Chellamae. “I’m very grateful to my fans. It’s them who have made me so popular and constantly encourage me to churn out good numbers,” says the music director.
