Simon K King is winning rave reviews for his music and background score in the recently released Sathya, which is successfully running in theatres for a second week. It took the three-film-old composer, three years to finally get this recognition.
Admitting that there was a lot of pressure on him to give his best for the film as another failure would have been devastating, a beaming Simon attributes the overwhelming success to team effort. “Actor Sibiraj, director Pradeep Krishnamurthy and I put in a lot of work for this film. After all, we have all had our share of failures. So, it’s very satisfying to finally reap the benefits of our hard work.”
Simon says the script gave him a lot of scope to explore new ideas with his music, and “Sibiraj and Pradeep gave me the freedom to experiment.” He took a chance and used fusion music in the mystery thriller. “The background score was vital to ensure that the suspense got maintained. So, we did not want to use loud Western music which would have been too jarring,” he says, adding that the feedback from the audience vindicates their decision.
In Simon’s view and also going by the response in all FM stations, the pick of his album is the melody, Yevvana, sung by Kalyani and Yasin. “I also love the version sung by Remya Nambeesan. I am thrilled that the number still retains the top position in all the channels,” he says, adding, “I’m quite fond of the fast paced Sanghu, too, which was picturised effectively in the film.” His initial plan was to introduce a new singer for that song, but the team felt that Simon’s voice was best suited for the track. “It was a bonus for me and I’m not complaining (laughs).”
Simon says he learned a lot when assisting Vijay Anthony on the music for Saithan and Pichaikaaran. “He taught me the importance of ensuring that the music is in sync with the mood of the film. That really came in handy when Sathya happened.”
So what’s next for this composer who has finally hit his stride? “I’m working on another film with Pradeep. There are also some other offers coming my way, thanks to Sathya. But I will be careful about choosing my projects.”
