Shammi mostly featured in comic roles, starred in films like Coolie No. 1, Mardon Wali Baat and Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi.

She began her career with supporting roles and then slowly got lead roles. She is known for her goofy and comical characters. Her famous films as supporting actress include Half Ticket, Halaku, Samaj Ko Badal Dalo and films with Rajesh Khanna like The Train, Red Rose, Aanchal, Kudrat, Awara Baap and Swarg.
