HYDERABAD: A division Bench of the High Court on Tuesday ordered issuance of notices to more than 30 professional colleges situated within the zone, prohibited under GO No.111, around drinking water lakes in Hyderabad city.

The bench, comprising justice V Rama Subramanian and justice N Balayogi, was dealing with a PIL filed by Quality Foundation which complained that though there were prohibitory orders in force, those institutions got the approval of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The state and central governments could not have issued any proceedings which would facilitate working of such institutions. These colleges have huge concrete buildings affecting water flow and have become major sources of pollution and effluents.

The courts have held that no polluting activity is permissible within a 10 km radius of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar which are the city’s two major drinking water sources.
