HYDERABAD: Hussainsagar is polluted. And nothing is being done about it. However, with a Hyderbad-based company now coming forward with a Canadian technology to take up the challenge of cleaning the lake, things are set to change, or so it seems.

Matrix Environment, having expertise in removing pollutants and sediments from water bodies through Ezox system, will make efforts to clean up the lake on a pilot basis, free of cost for three days, starting from March 20. Based on the results, the process would be continued after the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority takes a decision.
The presence of dissolved Oxygen and solids in the lake, at 1.7 mg/l and 872 mg/l respectively, is highly hazardous. However, Matrix Environment has claimed to improve the same to 11 mg/l and 20 mg/l in a span of three months.

HMDA officials told Express that this would be a first-of-its-kind project not only in India but Asia as well. Meanwhile, Telangana Pollution Control Board has termed it as an innovative technology. The board also stated that the installation of equipment does not require its consent under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 or Air (Prevention and control of Pollution) Act, 1981 as there is no generation of waste due to the installation. TSPCB had agreed to monitor real time water quality and disseminate to HMDA to take further decision.
