LUCKNOW: A Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator and his four aides were Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by an Uttar Pradesh court for their involvement in a murder nine years ago.

Usman-ul Haq, the SP legislator from Moradabad Dehat, was held guilty in the nine-year-old murder of Moazzam, and sentenced to life imprisonment by the additional district judge Anil Kumar, police added.

"Moazzam, a resident of the Bhojpur locality in Moradabad, was a history-sheeter and used to work for the SP MLA," police inspector S.S. Rana told IANS.

Differences cropped up between the two in September 2000, when Moazzam told Haq that he would not work with him any more. Later, Moazzam joined hands with the rivals of the SP MLA. Haq could not tolerate this and got Moazzam killed, according to police.

Moazzam was shot dead in Faridpur village in Moradabad, some 250 km from here.
