NEW DELHI: HMS Trincomalee, a sail frigate built two centuries ago at the historic Naval Dockyard Mumbai, will feature at Rajpath on the Republic Day as a small tribute by the Navy to the country’s maritime journey. The photograph of HMS Trincomalee on Naval tableau will showcase the past, said senior officers.
The sail ship, last of the Nelsonic frigates in existence in the world today, is now a showpiece at Hartlepool after it was restored in 2001. Even after the restoration, it retains over 60 percent of her original hull fabric. The ship’s existence is loaded with history.
Trincomalee was named after the harbour on the east coast of Sri Lanka to commemorate the British victory over the Dutch in 1795 and floated out from Bombay Dock on October 12, 1817. The Naval Dockyard was built by the East India Company 275 years ago and is still going strong.
