India, Bangladesh to sign extradition treaty in January

India and Bangladesh have agreedto sign the extradition treaty in January during the proposedvisit of Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to Dhaka.

"Both sides agreed that the extradition treaty, which isunder consideration by both governments, may be finalised atan early date. It was agreed that Revised Travel Agreement(RTA) as well as the extradition treaty will be finalized andsigned in January, 2013 during the proposed visit of IndianHome Minister to Dhaka," said a joint statement issued afterShinde had with his Bangladeshi counterpart Muhiuddin KhanAlamgir here.

The statement, read out by Shinde, said "both sides notedthat the action was being taken for repatriation of sentencedprisoners to either country under the agreement for transferof sentenced prisoners. Both sides agreed to allow developmentwork within 150 yards of zero line."

The two countries also agreed not to resort to firingunless fired upon or attacked by terrorists or armedcriminals, the statement said while expressing regret overdeaths and loss of life on the border.

Shinde said "mechanisms have put in place which havegreatly reduced the scope for such incidents and havestrengthened mutual trust and goodwill among the borderguarding forces and people living in the border areas.

"The number of such incidents has steadily come down inthe last few years. However, even one loss of life is toomany. To ensure that no incidents take place in future, Indiaand Bangladesh must work jointly together and further enhancecooperation between our border guarding forces to eliminateillegal trans-border activities," Shinde said.
