3-year Jail for Ex-minister of Punjab in Assets Case

CHANDIGARH: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab cabinet minister Sucha Singh Langah was on Wednesday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and imposed a hefty fine of ` 1.10 crore in a disproportionate assets case.  

Langah, a former agriculture minister was convicted by district court of Mohali.

Additional district and sessions Judge D S Johal convicted Langah along with another accused Amrik Singh.  

Meanwhile, the court acquitted five others accused in the case. The case dates back to 2002 when the state vigilance bureau had registered a case against Langah and others for disproportionate assets. He was  arrested by the vigilance bureau during the then Congress regime.

Reacting to the development, Langah outside the Mohali district court said that he will challenge the verdict in the Punjab and Haryana High court   Langah was Public Works Department (PWD) minister during the tenure of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from 1997 to 2002. He was the Agriculture Minister in the Badal government between 2007 and 2012.

He was considered close to Badal earlier. But lost the election in the 2012 Punjab Assembly polls. Langah is not new to controversies. In December last year, the officers of the rural department went on strike after Langah threatened to eliminate District Development and Panchayat Officerof  Gurdaspur for not complying with his wishes in allotment of panchayat land.
