Guwahati: Post-demonetisation, Assam has not yet seen the arrest of any black money hoarders but torn Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes were found floating on drains in three localities of Guwahati on Monday morning.

The police estimates of the total amount destroyed were around Rs 3.5 crore.

The residents of Bhetapara woke up to news about a large number of the torn high-value notes floating on a drain. A woman of the locality said she had seen some people near the drain on Sunday night.

“They came riding two-wheelers and carrying two large sacks. I thought they had brought the corpses of some domestic animals to dump there,” she told reporters.

Torn Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes were also found floating on drains in Chandan Nagar and Rukminigaon localities of the city.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Nath told Express that the torn notes would be sent to the regional RBI office here for examination.

Meanwhile, despite the troubles to get money from banks and ATMs, the people in the state are happy over the fact that demonetisation has stolen the sleeps of the black money hoarders.
