Kapil Sibal sought deferment of Ramjanambhoomi case at Congress behest: Amit Shah

On Wednesday, one of the Babri Masjid litigants, Haji Mehboob, said the Muslims wanted early resolution of the decades-old dispute.

NEW DELHI: With one of the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid case petitioners saying the Muslims wanted its "early resolution", BJP President Amit Shah on Wednesday said it proved that Kapil Sibal was speaking on the Congress' behalf when he sought to delay the Supreme Court hearing till after the 2019 general elections.

"Now that the Sunni Waqf Board has said that they don't agree with what Kapil Sibal said in the apex court, it is certain that Sibal spoke in his capacity as a Congress leader, with the blessings of party high command," Shah said in a tweet.

"Shameful posturing by the Congress on Ram Temple issue!" he said.

On Tuesday, senior counsel Kapil Sibal, who represents the Waqf board in the case, asked the apex court to hear the matter only in July 2019.

The Bharatiya Janata Party had criticised Sibal for his stand, and claimed he did it at the Congress' behest. The Congress, however, distanced itself from Sibal's comments and said it wanted a verdict in the case to come soon.

On Wednesday, one of the Babri Masjid litigants, Haji Mehboob, said the Muslims wanted early resolution of the decades-old dispute, contradicting Sibal's contention.
