Civilian killed, three soldiers injured in militant attack in South Kashmir’s Shopian

Police sources said militants attacked a Tata Sumo hired by army for evening patrol near Kiloora area of Imam Sahib area in Shopian district this evening.

SRINAGAR: Militants on Thursday evening attacked a cab hired by army in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, killing a civilian driver and injuring three army men including a Major.

Police sources said militants attacked a Tata Sumo hired by army for evening patrol near Kiloora area of Imam Sahib area in Shopian district this evening.

They said militants fired indiscriminately from AK-47 rifles towards the vehicle in which army men were travelling.

“In the militant firing, the civilian driver of the vehicle and three army men including a Major travelling in the cab were injured,” sources said.

They said the injured driver succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospital while the injured army men are undergoing treatment at the army hospital.

According to sources, one of the injured army men is Major-rank officer.

“He has sustained bullet injury in right hand,” they said.

After the militant attack, police, army and paramilitary personnel laid siege around the area to conduct searches and track down the militants responsible for the attack.

The militant attack took place few hours after over 4000 army, police and paramilitary personnel called off over eight-hour long massive combing and search operation in over dozen villages in Shopian district.

The search operation was launched after intelligence inputs about presence of local and foreign militants in Shopian.
