SRINAGAR: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was injured on Saturday in south Kashmir's Shopian district when his service rifle went off accidentally.

Police said SPO Muhammad Amir was injured in Zainapora police station. He was shifted to Srinagar for treatment.

The SPOs are engaged on a fixed monthly pay package in Jammu and Kashmir to fight militancy.

Although designated as police officers, the SPOs draw much lesser remuneration than a police constable. They are also not given the basic training in handling weapons as is mandatory for policemen in the country.
