AGARTALA: Tripura government is expecting one-time relaxation in professional qualification for candidates aspiring to be teachers but not possessing BEd and D.El.Ed degrees, education minister Ratan Lal Nath said here today.

Recently, the state government received a green single from Delhi that Tripura may get one-time relaxation in professional qualification, but not in minimum educational qualification, to cope up with the grave shortage of teachers in the state.

"Though Tripura has about seven lakh educated unemployed youths, hardly any job aspirant with required professional degrees eligible to be recruited as a teacher wants to take up the job, and consequently, most of the schools are facing a shortage of teachers," Nath said.

He said, however, there will be no leniency in minimum educational qualification which requires the candidates to have at least 50 per cent average marks in higher secondary exam for elementary level teachers and a minimum of 50 per cent average marks in all levels for secondary and higher secondary teachers as per National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) guideline.

"Under the Right to Education Act (RTE), both educational and professional qualifications have been made compulsory creating trouble for the states like Tripura," the minister argued, adding that most of the 10,323 teachers, who are facing the axe after Supreme Court's verdict, don't have the minimum qualification as well educational qualification.
