From our online archive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bid to make the police stations more people-friendly, special Public Relations Officers (PROs) have been posted in all the police stations in the state. The public can get in touch with the PROs so that they could get the service from the police easily and also seek information.
The PROs are police officers in the rank of senior civil police officers or Additional Sub-Inspector. They were selected through a screening process led by the respective District Police Chiefs. They also underwent a special soft skill training programme to handle the new job.

PROs are available in front of the police stations and the public can avail their service from 8 am to 8 pm. They have the duty of welcoming visitors and receiving complaints. If the complaint is found to be genuine, the PRO would inform the Station House Officer or GD charge of the police station about it. They are also bound to help differently-abled persons, senior citizens, children and women approaching the police. They also give the copies of FIR and ensure that the public avail the benefits of Right to Information and Right to Service Acts.

They should also work for the promotional activities of Student Police Cadet project and Janamaithri police.  In a press statement, State Police Chief Loknath Behera said that the implementation of a PRO system was aimed at  ensuring decent service to the public from the police. He also instructed all the district police chiefs, DySPs, CIs and SHOs to ensure that the system functioned smoothly.
