KOTTAYAM:THE revolutionary song, Balikudeerangale, which has been cherished by many generations of Kerala, turned 60 on Monday. Balikudeerangale, penned as a a tribute to martyrs by the remarkable Vayalar Ramavarma-G Devarajan Master duo, has inspired revolutionaries over the years.
To mark the song’s diamond jubilee celebrations, the Purogamana Kala Sahithya Sangham will organise a musical evening in Kottayam on Monday.Sahithya Pravarthaka Cooperative Society president Ezhacherry Ramachandran will inaugurate the meeting at the old police station ground at 3 pm. K Suresh Kurup MLA will deliver the keynote address. Songs of Vayalar, P Bhaskaran and ONV Kurup will be rendered.
The song was created as per the order of the then Chief Minister EMS Namboothirippad for a programme to commemorate the 100th year of country’s first freedom struggle, at Palayam junction in Thiruvananthapuram in 1957. EMS wanted it to be a tribute to the revolutionaries, who laid down their lives during India’s first freedom struggle.

The spirited tribute to martyrs was sung for the first time at VJT Hall by twenty-five singers including Devarajan and K S George
