THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in the country, human rights clubs will be formed in schools across the state. The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has decided to form the clubs before December 10, which is the World Human Rights Day. The decision was taken at a meeting called by commission acting chairman P Mohandas.

In the policy address to the Assembly, Governor P Sathasivam had said human rights clubs would be formed in all government, aided and unaided schools. Apart from creating awareness among children about human rights, it was also decided to give awareness classes to teachers and parents. Mohandas said the initiative aims at creating a law-abiding society. He said the children would be encouraged to respect the rights of others and t o u p h o l d t h e i r responsibility.

The commission will send the action plan of the project to the Education and Social Justice Department by August 30. The steps for forming the clubs will begin in September, he said. State Human Rights Commission member K Mohan Kumar, Kerala Sate Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Shobha Koshy, Special Justice Department director T V Anupama, Human Rights Commission secretary S H Jayakeshan, Vocational Higher Secondary director A Farooq, general education additional director Jimmi K Jose and higher secondary deputy director S Sathyan were present at the meet.
