MALAPPURAM : Even as the police and people’s representatives are attempting to broker peace between the CPM and the Muslim League, the members of both the parties locked horns, leaving nine persons injured at Unniyal, Tanur, here on Monday.

The injured, three of them serious, were taken to Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. The Tanur police, who did not disclose the details of the injured, deployed more forces in the region to prevent untoward incidents.

The inter-party clash took place on Monday morning following a football match at Unniyal. Police said the nine CPM workers were sleeping at the football ground at midnight when a gang of alleged IUML members mounted an attack on them.

The police said the victims were assigned to look after the football ground where a seven-a-side football is going on. Following the incident, the CPM called a hartal at Niramaruthur panchayat.

The Tanur area had witnessed various inter-political clashes over the past few months, and despite best efforts made by the District Collector, the Police and Minister K T Jaleel to restore normalcy, the area remained tense.

The conciliatory talks between the leaders did not yield any result and the area is still vulnerable to political clashes. Many were injured and properties destroyed in the previous fights.
