Former Advocate General M Ratna Singh, 92, passed away in Kozhikode on Monday.  He was undergoing treatment for kidney ailment at PVS Hospital, Kozhikode.

KOCHI: Former Advocate General M Ratna Singh, 92, passed away in Kozhikode on Monday.  He was undergoing treatment for kidney ailment at PVS Hospital, Kozhikode.  

Singh pursued his law studies at the Government Law College, Ernakulam, and started practising in 1953 under the late K Kunjirama Menon in Kozhikode. Later, he started practising in Kochi and became a Senior Central Government Standing Counsel in 1974.  

As a lawyer with deep interest in criminal law, he had brilliantly conducted cases related to naxal attacks on police stations in the Thalassery/Pulpally areas.  

The major cases conducted by Singh include the SI Soman murder case (Panur), Cheemeni murder case, Pennamma murder case (Thrissur), Sujata murder case (Manjeri) and Rajan case.   He had served as the Director General of Prosecution from 1991 to 96, and assumed the post of Advocate General of the Kerala High Court in June 2001.


He is survived by wife Savithri; children Sherin, Nazrien, Shamerin and Shahier Singh; sons-in-law P V Gangadharan (Mathrubhumi), C C Sasidharan (CC Brothers) and T G Rajendran and daughter-in-law Seetha.  The funeral will be held at the Mavoor Road crematorium at 1 pm on Tuesday.
