When 38-year-old senior software engineer P Anitha was rushed to the hospital with excruciating lower back pain, emergency doctors quickly diagnosed severe renal colic caused by kidney stones. Anitha didn’t work outdoors in the heat; she spent her days inside an air-conditioned tech park office. However, driven by back-to-back international client calls and tight sprint deadlines, her workday was a continuous rush. The cool office environment masked her thirst, and in her hurry to complete tasks, she repeatedly pushed off drinking water or stepping away for a restroom break. Over time, this habit of neglecting basic fluid intake in the rush of daily work led to hyper-concentrated urine and crystal formation in her kidneys.

Anitha’s situation highlights a growing clinical reality: kidney stones and chronic fluid deficits do not affect only those toiling under direct sunlight. In fast-paced desk jobs, constant screen time, meeting-heavy schedules, and climate-controlled rooms often lead people to ignore subtle body signals. When fluid intake remains inadequate over long periods, the kidneys conserve water by concentrating urine, allowing minerals like calcium and oxalate to crystallise and form renal stones.

This daily routine reflects a widespread clinical challenge that extends into everyday productivity and physical health. Medical experts point out that relying on arbitrary rules can be misleading, and understanding proper baseline requirements is critical for avoiding long-term complications.

“There is no one single formula that fits all people, but as a sort of practical place to begin, most healthy adults can think in terms of roughly 30–35 ml of fluids for each kg of body weight, per day,” explains Aditi Prasad Apte, senior clinical nutritionist at Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru. “If someone is around 70kg then, generally they’ll be looking at about 2.1–2.5 litres each day. And yes, that can move up depending on hot weather, hard workouts, fever, pregnancy or breastfeeding.”

Apte emphasises that observing physical cues is essential for monitoring daily hydration. “Rather than clinging only to numbers, there are basic body cues that can be surprisingly useful. Urine that looks pale yellow or straw-coloured usually points to good hydration, while darker yellow urine may mean it’s time to sip more. If thirst keeps showing up, you notice a dry mouth, more tiredness than normal, dizziness, or you are peeing less often, those can be dehydration signals too. For longer lasting exercise or if you’re sweating heavily, it matters to replace not just water, but also electrolytes. And for people living with conditions like heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease, it’s best to stick to their physician’s guidance, because too much fluid in those cases can actually be risky.”

“A standard rule for the intake of fluids does not exist, although an approximate formula which could be used is 30-35 ml/kg of body weight on average every day,” says Dr Brunda M S, senior consultant in internal medicine at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru. “This amount is only an approximation and has to be modified depending on climate, exercise, sweating, diet, illness and personal medical condition. One also needs to know that fluid comes not only from water but also from food, milk, tea, soup and all other liquids. It is important to observe urine colour.”

Dietary contributions and diverse liquid sources remain essential components of meeting this daily threshold. Fluids obtained through meals — including soups, milk, tea, and water-rich solid foods like fruits and vegetables — all work together to sustain the body’s fluid reservoir without relying entirely on plain water.

For professionals operating in busy, high-stress environments, health experts emphasise that maintaining fluid balance is not about chasing fixed gallon goals. By using the 30-35 ml per kg formula as a flexible starting point, paying attention to urine colour, and responding promptly to physical warning signs like thirst and dizziness, desk workers can effectively protect their renal health and prevent the long-term complications of chronic dehydration.
