MOST internet users among the younger generation in India are hooked to social networking sites. Though the trend began with the popularity of Orkut, later it became an addiction and now most teens have an account in social networking sites or community portals.
In future, there may be social networking portals targeting specific class of people and certain interests like fashion, cooking, games, religion and finance. Networking sites based on videos and albums are favourites among youngsters in India.
According to the latest report by Comscore, a marketing research company which provides marketing data and services to internet’s large business groups, Orkut is still the most popular networking site in the country. Comscore found that global social networking brands like Orkut, Facebook, hi5, LinkedIn and MySpace continued to gain prominence in India.
According to the report, Orkut is the most visited social networking site in India in December 2008 with more than 12.8 million visitors.
Facebook is second most popular social networking site with 4 million visitors. The third most popular social networking site is Bharatstudent with 3.3 million visitors followed by hi5 with 2 million visitors.
Other popular networking sites in India featured in the list are ibibo, Myspace, LinkedIn, PerfSpot, BigAdda and Fropper.
