The e-mail that talks to you

Computer developers have created a device that reads out e-mails and responds to the voice to draft a reply.

The iLane, which is designed to be used in a car, features a synthesised female voice, which alerts users when a new email has been received and reads out the message.

The gadget, by Intelligent Mechatronic Systems, is currently only available in the US and Canada, but the manufacturers said they hope to introduce it to Europe by the end of the year.

The compact device, which can be mounted on a dashboard, sun visor or air vent, costs $600 (£415), plus an $8 (£6) per month subscription.

It connects wirelessly to BlackBerry smartphones, and users wear a Bluetooth headset to issue voice commands and read, delete or reply to e-mails. It is powered through the car's cigarette lighter.

Users can choose to send from two stock email responses – "I am in transit and will respond shortly" or "Call me if it's important" – or they can record a 15 minute voice memo which the iLane will send as an email attachment to the correspondent.

In addition to handling email messages, the iLane also allows people to make phone calls simply by calling out the name of someone in their address book, and can also read out the latest news and sport headlines, weather forecasts and traffic reports. It can reminder users of appointments, birthdays and events stored in their phone's calendar.

The device is only compatible with BlackBerry phones at the moment, but the makers of the iLane said they intend to extend this to other smartphones in due course.
